Car Maintenance for Cold Weather

Whether you’re traveling to colder places or live in these areas, it is important to take action when protecting your car from winter climates. We recommend a few precautions for less complications and more time on the road.

Check Fluids

To keep your engine from overheating, it is essential to check your antifreeze (coolant) level. Using your car owner’s manual, this fluid, usually mixed with distilled water, is simple to check. If too much water is mixed in, the coolant is at risk of freezing. We also strongly suggest checking brake fluid, engine oil, and automatic transmission fluid to keep your car running smoothly.

Test Your Battery

With extreme cold, car battery capacity decreases significantly and is a top reason for roadside assistance calls. To avoid this, we recommend getting your battery tested by a mechanic and getting it replaced every 3-5 years.

No Idling

As a common myth, drivers have been told to warm up their car in the winter by idling for an extended period of time. However, for modern cars, it is best to idle for less than a minute and ease into driving to warm up the car. Idling is known to waste gasoline and put unnecessary stress on the engine.

Wash Your Car

Cold weather and snow bring harsh elements like road salt that can cause damage to the exterior of your car. Wipe New Original can protect your car from road salt and restores your trim to give you the that shiny, new look.

Check Windshield Wipers

For winter storms, having visibility is extremely important. When temperatures drop, it is easy for windshield wipers to crack, so look out for this. Wipers should be replaced annually. Windshield wiper fluid is just as important for visibility. Because windshield wiper fluid is known to freeze, we suggest considering winter-specific fluid.

Protect Your Car from the Sun

highway with cars driving toward the sun

While the sun provides us with light, warmth and energy, it can also be damaging. You probably already know that too much sun is not good for your skin or eyes, and the same goes for your car. Both the interior and exterior of your car can become damaged when exposed to the sun for too long.

Protect the interior

You’ve probably noticed that when you get into your car during the summer, it’s hot—very hot. You immediately want to roll down the windows and blast the A/C until the cool air kicks in. The air inside your car can reach temperatures over 150 degrees Fahrenheit, especially when direct sunlight is beaming in for hours at a time. To help protect your car’s interior from sunlight damage, consider the following:

Park in the shade

This is the most obvious solution. Sunlight can fade the color of your dashboard and your seats. Wipe New Original not only restores your car’s surfaces, but it also protects them from sun exposure.

Use sun panels

Another simple solution is to place sun panels in your front windshield and rear window. This will help keep your car’s interior much cooler.

Keep your dashboard clean

To avoid stains, make sure that the interior of your car is clean. The sun is really good at melting food and even dirt into the surfaces of your car and leaving stains.

Keep your windows slightly cracked

Check the weather, and if no rain is in the forecast, keep your windows just slightly cracked to allow the hot air to escape.

Get Your Car Summer Ready

silver mustang driving through grand canyon

It’s almost everyone’s favorite time of the year: summer. Endless BBQ’s, beach days, road trips, and so much more make summer the best time of year. This means you will be on the go a lot, spending a lot of time in your car. You’ll want to make sure it is in tip top shape both inside and out.

  1. Working AC system

Summer days are hot, and there’s no changing that. You may have been able to get through the winter with a non-functioning A/C system, but now it’s time to get it working. On those super hot days, having the windows down just won’t cut it. If you’re handy, you might be able to get in there and check for a leak and if not, you’ll have to take it to a certified mechanic.

  1. Use a sun shade

AC or not, we always recommend using a sun shade during the summer months. Not only will it keep the inside of your car a bit cooler, it will also protect your dashboard and upholstery from fading. If you have dark leather seats, blocking the sun out should be a top priority to reduce the temperature on scorching hot seats.

  1. Clean your car

Alright, you’ve checked you’re a/C system, fluid levels and have ensured your car is ready for the summer heat. The last thing you will need to do is clean your car. Afterall, you won’t want to show up to that BBQ in a dirty car, right? Include all the works when cleaning your car, like wiping down the interior, bathing the exterior and go one step further to ensure your headlights are sparkly clean with Wipe New Headlight Restore.

8 Autumn Car Care and Driving Tips!

wipe-new-fall-car-tips

Summer 2015 will soon be at a close and Fall is right around the corner.  That means cooler days, Halloween, and road trips to enjoy the Autumn colors.   It is also means taking some time to care for your car.  Here are some car care and Fall driving tips to consider:

  • Shorter days require more dependency on clear headlights. Foggy headlights are less effective than clear ones putting you and your passengers at risk. Pickup Wipe New Headlights and return your headlights to new again for just $10 and a few minutes time.
  • Check your battery! Battery life can reduce from the extreme summer heat.
  • Check your tires! Changing temperatures affect tire pressure.  All tires should be filled to their recommended tire pressure and checked for tire wear.  Don’t forget to check your spare tire.  Be mindful that Autumn often means wet leaves on the road.
  • Fall is a great time to check your air filters and wiper blades! Old Man Winter comes next! Get prepared!
  • Avoid parking your car over piles of dry fallen leaves. Your catalytic converter could spark a fire.
  • Keep your eye out for deer. Fall is deer mating season, so the danger of a deer darting onto a road, especially between dusk and dawn, increases.
  • Fall means back to school and children are out on the streets earlier than in the Summer. Take it slow and be mindful of children running in the street.
  • Be mindful of the weather. Fall weather conditions can change abruptly. Thunderstorms, sleet, hail and even snow are not that unusual.
  • Roads covered with a summer’s worth of grease can become slick when wet or covered with early morning frost, so anticipate those conditions and be careful.

Make Your Shutters Shine with Wipe New!

Carin Lane from Times Union (Albany, NY) says her car is only two years old and she felt she didn’t need to use Wipe New on her automobile.  Lane did decide, however, that there was one job that Wipe New could tackle:  her house shutters!

Lane bought Wipe New at her local target, read the directions, and was “eager” to see if Wipe New would work on her dingy, old shutters! She first realized how little Wipe New was needed to do the job.  “The label says a lot goes a very, very long way. I’d say that’s a fair claim. I still have most the bottle left,” she reports.    After using a bit of elbow grease with her Wipe, Lane commented on how quickly the process went.  “I was able to quickly wipe, with the help of a step stool, all the first floor shutters in about 15 minutes or fewer.”

The best part?  Lane loved how her shutters looked!  “[M]y shutters shined like a freshly waxed Cadillac,” she says. “The vinyl was back to its original burgundy color, instead of the grayish brown it had become.”
